                  Time to Go Home

June 17

Running errands is a pretty pleasant affair around here-filled with easy familiarity, moments to catch up with friends and lighthearted hellos from visitors who seem surprised to see faces they know. (There aren't that many shopping choices.)   Yesterday's list of stops ran true and it rained-a good thing.  One of those late afternoon storms which blow in and out quickly, leaving Apalach dripping and sweet. List completed, I headed back for the Island, watching the day-end light on the bay and generally congratulating myself on being wise enough to live here.        A fin sliced through the very low tide, really close in.  I pulled onto the shoulder and followed it slowly along the causeway.  Now I could see that it was a dolphin, not anything omminous.  A small school of bait fish swirled the water ahead of him, then, Bingo!  Fish jumped through the air and water sprayed as the dolphin chased his dinner.  He followed a larger fish right up onto a tiny sandbar then wriggled and slipped back into the water, fish in mouth.  A few minutes passed but he was gone, full and happy.  So was I.  Except for the little fish, what a lovely experience.         Oh well, time to go home-too late to go to the beach. Wasn't that fun?  Isn't life grand!  Back onto the bridge la, la, la...    SCREECH!! to a stop.  BEAR!!!  A young black bear was standing by the rail. Only four cars were on the bridge and all had stopped.  The bear looked at us staring at him, rethought his plan and headed for a patch of woods.         A natural thing.  An unnatural thing.  Both marvelous to see up close. And humbling.  Living here is a also a matter of respect.

IMPORTANT PS !!!

LIGHTHOUSE RECONSTRUCTION

The fallen lighthouse is being reconstructed on the main island.  Of particular note, this is the first brick lighthouse constructed in well over 100 years!   Since there is no one available to offer first hand advice, those involved in the  process are truly reinventing the wheel !!  Please visit website listed below for updates.
